PBL Jigsaw Day 1:
What is project based learning?
In project-based learning, students work in groups to solve challenging problems that are authentic, curriculum-based, and often interdisciplinary. Learners decide how to approach a problem and what activities to pursue. They gather information from a variety of sources and synthesize, analyze, and derive knowledge from it. PBL teaches collaborative, critical thinking skills. PBL is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. Students are inspired to learn

What are the elements of project based learning?
-connected to something real and involves collaboration and reflection
-learning through experiences
-engage students through hands-on, serious, authentic experiences
-allow for alternative approaches that address students' individual differences, variations in learning styles, intelligences, abilities, and disabilities
Elements of PBL include real challenges that provide students a chance to create something that demonstrates what they have learned.

What are the principles of project based learning?
-real-world focus is central to the process
-work is ultimately valuable as a real problem that needs solving, or a project that impact others
PBL is designed to allow students to learn collaboration, critical thinking, written and oral communication, and the values of work ethic.
The main principle behind PBL is the more actively involved students are in their learning experiences, the more they will learn.

Four fundamental features of PBL include:
1. teams of 3+ students work on an in-depth project for 3-8 weeks.
2. a complex question is posed and activities and new information is presented to deepen the work
3. the project is scheduled with plans, drafts, benchmarks, and a presentation to parents and community experts
4. timely assessments and/or feedback is provided for many skills including content, oral and written communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills

Why should we use project based learning?
-it's motivating for students
-encourages collaboration, problem-solving skills, higher level of thinking,
real impact on the world, incorporates technology and research
We need to prepare students for success in the 21st century. They need to have critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.
PBL increases critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. PBL increases student motivation and engagement in the study
